Rio is the place for merriment and celebration. As cultures from all over the world come together to enjoy the night with food, drinks and dancing, all of Rio 's bars wake up and become places of fantasy. The carnival is a piece of heaven where music, dancing, lights, colours and imagination come alive. This is usually celebrated 40 days before Easter and it marks the beginning of Lent. There are parades in the center of the city where over 200,000 people may gather. There are also parades in the Botanical gardens, Ipanema and in the hills of Santa Teresa. The food, the colourful, extravagant costumes, dances and the music last for four days, sometimes more. Firework displays, concerts, and other major festivals also add to the entertainment for Rio 's visiting population.
One of the best things about Rio is its night life. Young, multi-cultural, enthusiastic crowds dance the night away in bars such as Baronetti, Cristal Lounge, Spazio, Melt, Sky Lounge and Zero Zero. In Copaca bana, Bunker, Mariuzinn, Rio Scenarium, Carioca da Gema, Fundição Progresso, Bar Bofetada, Hipodromo, Queen Victoria, Shenanigans pub and Casa Rosa. Many of these clubs cater to all types of visitors. Some of them cater specifically to lesbians or gay population
